about

This was another assignment from Craig Carothers—this time to take a cliche phrase and twist it into something new. A very naked lyric emerged describing my wedding, a doomed honeymoon, and the colliding, fighting, and paralysis. The morning of our band rehearsal, Anne sent me a voice memo of her idea for the guitar lick. I loved it, and the band took it to a psychedelic terrain—which felt perfect to me. At the end of that first rehearsal, I told the band that this was the song that would make me want to buy my own record. A few days later, the band recorded the near seven minute jam in one take. This became the end of the album version of the song. I get lost in it every time I listen to it.

Worst of Both Worlds

It was the worst of both worlds
The worst of both worlds
Colliding, Fighting
The pair of us were paralyzed…

Inside, I’d had enough of my family
I cut that tree down, all the children were set free
Exposing the roots, secret truths once so cozy
Inside

Outside, our wedding day was approaching
The foundation split after years of devotion
Two lovers now strangers, the fear forced the anger
Outside

It was the worst of both worlds
The worst of both worlds
Colliding, Fighting
The pair of us were paralyzed…

Inside, you had some grief to attend to
You lost your sister then lost your best friend too
I just rocked you, hoping that I could soothe you
Inside

Outside
We raised a tent and some glasses
We spoke of forever in front of the masses
The honeymoon soon kicked the both of our asses
Outside

I had a dream, we were still standing
Before the vows had been broken
We had a love, we had understanding
But I guess we needed to break…

It was the worst of both worlds
The worst of both worlds
Colliding, Fighting
The pair of us were paralyzed…

about

Jesse Correll Nashville, Tennessee

Inner Shibori is Jesse's fourth record. The 13-song release is an album oozing luxury and longing. The production approach; sophisticated and tastefully sentimental songs; and the smooth musicianship recalls Frank Sinatra and Chet Baker's lonely balladeering, and the type of recordings made at Capital Studios in Hollywood during the 1950s and 1960s. ... more
