about

After I moved to Nashville, I started a songwriting club where I offered up a song prompt on Sunday, and the group had two weeks to email their finished song using that prompted phrase somewhere within it. If a club member didn’t submit a song, they were out. “On my finger tips” was the prompt for this song. I remember sitting in the waiting room at a doctor’s office and the opening line scrolled through my mind—“Seaweed, ‘round my ankle, a cork-screwed tentacle.” This oceanic dreamscape became an example of my subconscious knowing things before the rest of me did. I wrote it pretty quickly—in an attempt to describe cycles of resentment and misunderstanding that were tearing my relationship apart. A relationship that, at that time, I thought was fine.

Seaweed ‘round my ankle
A corkscrewed tentacle
Dragging me ever deeper
And just when we got comfortable

Down to the sea floor I’ll go again
Pulled by the undertow
I’ll long to feel sunlight on my fingertips
But I’ll just feel an icy cold

Off in the salty distance
I can see your pallid face
Both hands tied behind you
Some kind of inverted embrace

Down to the sea floor you’ll go again
Pulled by the undertow
You’ll long to feel sunlight on your fingertips
But you’ll just feel an icy cold

Here we go again
Though we’ve tried
Say that line again
And I’ll say mine

Two swimmers in the harbor
No two happier could be
Strokes slice the cresting water
They move around with so much ease

Down to the sea floor they’ll go
Pulled by the undertow
They’ll long to feel sunlight on their fingertips
But they’ll just feel an icy cold

about

Jesse Correll Nashville, Tennessee

Inner Shibori is Jesse's fourth record. The 13-song release is an album oozing luxury and longing. The production approach; sophisticated and tastefully sentimental songs; and the smooth musicianship recalls Frank Sinatra and Chet Baker's lonely balladeering, and the type of recordings made at Capital Studios in Hollywood during the 1950s and 1960s. ... more
